Mapping The Right of Moi Kelim in Sorong

Two days event on 20 and 21 of November 2014 have created a new memorial moment for the people in Moi Kelim – Sorong, West Papua Provinces of Indonesia. About 140 local leaders came and join the last final workshop to clarify, validate and recognize the tribe boundaries they mapped. Led by the local customary community Group of Malamoi (LMA Malamoi) Mr. Silas Ongge Kalami, the event  were organized well and the dynamic breath of proud is come. After 2 years process of implemented large scale mapping the community came with an agreement of 430,000 area that mapped for moi Kelim. 

This summary is trying to provides a flash back info about how the steps been taken, people involved and results be made in each process of mapping the Moi Kelim Customary Rights. Out of perfects the worked in kelim was held in many challenging issues include funding that were limited to support all listed process of Mapping.

The Beauty of Baliem Valley in Pictures

After Mamberamo and Kaimana, I would love to share how beauty is baliem valley. If most people are knowing the valley with "people wearing koteka" and a honai - a traditional housing. There are also another beautiful scene that Baliem has to make its visitor will have a more memorable experiences in live after visiting this place.


"Honai' traditional houses of Hubula people in Baliem valley. A wooden made wall with grass roof. This is the honai for Woman. Usually a women with their kids and pig will live together in this small wooden houses.




The valley is surrounded by beautiful mountain and wild yellow floweer. Blue skies are also coloring the landscape.


Geographically the valley is in 1600 m above sea level so most of the trees are small araucaria species with small diameter as a implication of adaptation to pressure and weather. Most of the community are using the trees as a fire woods.

"Becak' an Indonesia modified bike that be used as the public transport. It mostly operated by young and teenager in Wamena (the capital city) after their school.


 A man wearing koteka (traditional penis cover made from pumpkin) in town. It still common to find the old man wearing koteka in the city. Mostly they will ask for cash if you want to take a picture with them and sometime the hold something to sell.


Tradition honai for men. Lay in valley with beauty scene of hilly and silent wind.

Susi Air, one of the airplane company services in remote areas in Papua. This small pilatus airplane are fly with 6 passenger. It has a regular schedule to fly from and to Wamena.
