NGO’s In West Papua - Indonesia, Concern in Forests and Peoples issues

There are more than 10 NGO’s in west Papua who are concerned in Peoples and their natural resources managements and conservation. Some of them are Samdhana Partners. Here are the shorts description of them and what are they doing now. This notes just as a general information to those who might need. For more information please contact them. 1.       Manokwari
There are: PERDU Foundation (Yayasan Perdu), Yalihimo, Kamuki, Jasoil, Mnukwar, Foye, Paradisea Foundation and Yadupa.

PERDU
Perdu was the foundation who is worked on the conservation and natural resources management issue in West Papua. They had some experiences in community empowering on several places in west Papua such as Manokwari (People around Arfak Montain) and Bintuni. Since 2008 until now they become partners of Samdhana Institute for the IUCN-LLS project in Indonesia (Livelihood and Landscape Strategy). The people based forest management is the vital issue that being pushing in Kaimana now. Beside working with Samdhana for the community based forests management issue, they are also working with Oxfam for the mitigation of disaster in Manokwari.

PERDU was the local NGO’s with good record in the finance and administration reports. Even though sometimes late in coordination among one and other staff.

YALIHIMO
Yalihimo was Local NGO who were worked for the community organization issue. They are facilitates several village around Manokwari. Some as PERDU, they are also have good enough local resource to community empowering. At the beginning of the IUCN-LLS, they are worked with samdhana for the preliminary assessment in Bomberai.

YADUPA
Almost same with Yalihimo, they are working for community organizing issue. So far they are working for organizing the people products that being sold in traditional market.

MNUKWAR
This was the youngest NGO in Manokwari, they are consist of 3 people and working for the communication issue. Mnukwar was Samdhana Partner who were got grant through the Samdhana Small Grant Program. They are consent on make the local film to introduce people livelihood and their relationship with natural resources management. This year they got grant to do the comparison study about the impact of climate change for people in low land and highland around Arfak’s mountain. Some of their personnel are part of PERDU.

PARADISEA.
They are consent on the natural conservation issues. Most of their activities are in around Arfak Mountain and Tambrauw. They are also do the Basic Assesment of social condition, economic, cultures, politics, pattern and potential utilization agricultural land and forest, development actors in 19 villages in Sorong and Manokwari. So far they got funded by the RFN (Rain Forests Norway).

BENTARA
A group of an energetic young people working together on community empowerment program. The institution was founded by the former PERDU director Bustar Maitar. Bentara is much more settle with an offices and equipment for field facilitation. They recently have realize a cross island vessel that they will use for community organizing program. At the moment the bird head is their intervention sites with high attention to Knasoimos - they place where Green Peace and Telapak used to works. Village forests is of the key program they push with the community here.

KAMUKI
This was the NGO which is formed with support by the Partnership to be the networking for NGO’s in west Papua to get access of fund for their activities. They are working for the communication between NGO’s in Papua, those who has the activities around people and their natural resources management.

2.       Sorong
Beside International NGO such as CI-I (conservation international-Indonesia), TNC (The Natural Conservation) and WWF in Sorong, there are 2 famous local NGO which was working on the people and natural conservation issues. They are TRITON and Belantara.

TRITON
This was NGO was SAmdhana partner so far. For the past 3 years they get samdhana small grant program. Beside working with samdhana, they are also working with EIA (Environmental International Agency), and IUCN. They are focus on the issue of illegal logging around sorong-make a documentation with EIA, community logging with Telapak (National NGO) and dissemination information about climate change and REDD for people around Sorong. Beside this, they are also focused on cultural and facilitate several customary group around sorong.

Now they are also focus on the online TV-show name’s “Tiva TV” in manokwari.

Some time we face the problems in coordination with them especially on the financial and administration reports.

BELANTARA
Previously Belantara was part of TRITON Foundation in the division of Art, cultural and customary right. But because there is an internal debating about the idea of TRITON worked so they decide to separate from Triton then established Belantara as a New NGO. Now beside working as a art and cultural NGO in sorong they are also active on the conservation issue. They are also taking part on the preparation for the community logging which pushing by Telapak in sorong. Now they are in process to working with The Papua Gospel Church to do the advocacy and documentation for mining around Raja Ampat.

3.       Fak-Fak
Yamiko
Yamiko was samdhana Partner. They are focused on the issue of customary land right and community empowering. Last year they got grant from samdhana to facilitating the discussion among the customary leader in Fak-Fak. They are also interesting on the issue of mapping.

Focus on the community empowering and organizing


Gamapala
Focus on community empowering and support transparency of natural resources management in Fak-Fak. 


3.       Kaimana
Weer
A new institution that seriously concern in forests and people issues in Kaimana. The people in weer has long experiences in working with Samdhana Institute dan PERDU.
